Description
Trickling streams with headwaters high in the mountains wind their way through tree ferns under dense foliage. The Mongarlowe River is one example which starts in the Monga National Park about 15 kms east of Braidwood on the edge of the Great Dividing Range located on the eastern edge of Australia.
The “Monga” is home to some unique plants such as the Monga Waratah. There is also areas where one can see the world’s largest moss. The rainforest pockets are home to towering Plumwood trees (Eucryphia moorei) which have trunks covered with moss and lichen. The Monga was threatened by logging operations but was declared a National Park in 2001. The 25,000 ha area has since been extended and portions now are declared Wilderness.
