Description
Located about 100kms south of Alice Springs, Rainbow Valley features colourful sandstone bluffs and cliffs which are part of the James Range. The coloured rock bands in the sandstone cliffs were caused a long time ago by water dissolving the red iron of the sandstone layers. The red minerals formed a dark iron surface layer above the leached white layers of much softer rock below. Weathering and erosion are also responsible for other features in the valley.
The layering has produced bright colours particularly at dawn and sunset. There are some clay pans in front of the main cliffs which may fill with water from time to time
