Description

The Simpson Desert in the centre of Australia has the largest area of parallel sand dunes. This image was taken during a crossing in 2010 after a period of significant and relatively rare heavy rain. The crests of the 1000 odd sand dunes burst into life with flowers.

Each night, small lizards and birds appear and their foot prints can be clearly seen. The prevailing winds also produce mini ripples on the main dunes. Overnight, the colder temperatures combines with some dew keeps these patterns intact for a few hours.
